Water Moderates Temperature

by James Teague on Jul 19, 2012

The polar nature of water leads to large amounts of energy being released or absorbed. Oceans are kept at nearly the same temperatures year around. Cloud formations release large amounts of heat to form liquid water. Ice melting lowers water temperature as heat is removed to break down crystalline bonds. Calculation examples are included for the kinds of phase changes.
